3 Alcatraz Inmates Survived 1962 Escape, Letter Suggests

It’s arguably one of America’s greatest mysteries: What happened to the three men after they pulled off the infamous 1962 Alcatraz prison break?

Well according to a letter that came to light this week, they survived!

The letter, which is allegedly written by one of the escapees, reads in part:

“My name is John Anglin. I escape from Alcatraz in June 1962 with my brother Clarence and Frank Morris. I am 83 years old and I’m in bad shape. I have cancer. Yes we all made it that night but barely!”

The FBI have announced that this is the most recent piece of evidence that has forced authorities to reopen the infamous cold case. The letter was reportedly sent to the San Francisco Police Department’s Richmond Station in 2013.

Convicted bank robbers John and Clarence Anglin and Frank Morris all disappeared from Alcatraz in the early morning hours of June the 12th, 1962. The FBI announced that they had used a homemade drill to widen the vents inside their cells. They crawled through the vents which led them to the prison roof but not before leaving behind dummy heads made of plaster, paper mache, paint and human hair. The trio had constructed a raft out of 50 raincoats. They launched the makeshift raft into the choppy ocean and off they were into the dead of the night.

Authorities would assume that they did not make it to land despite the fact that their bodies were never found.

The letter, which was obtained by KPIX 5 claims that Frank Morris died in 2008 and Clarence Anglin died in 2011.
